Botulinum toxin A
Ageing causes skin and tissue changes in the face, especially around the eyes. The hallmarks of ageing include a tired wrinkled appearance, with lines in the forehead, in the glabellar area between the eyebrows, the “crow’s feet” and the “bunny lines” around the nose. Laughing, smiling, frowning and lifestyle factors all contribute to the development of these facial lines and wrinkles.
Botulinum toxin A is a natural substance made by the bacteria Clostridium Botulinum. This chemical prevents the release of the chemical messenger called acetylcholine which causes muscles to contract. Injections of Botox ™ can be used in minute quantities to reduce the tone or strength in individual muscles. Laughing, smiling, frowning and lifestyle factors all contribute to the development of facial lines and wrinkles so Botox ™ can be used to smooth lines and wrinkles for a younger, more rejuvenated look .The injections are non-invasive and most often used to smooth away forehead wrinkles, crow’s feet, laughter lines and ‘bunny lines’ around the nose.
The main property of this substance is that when it is injected, it paralyses the muscles. Several medical companies have developed a synthetic form of the toxin which has exactly the same effects as the natural toxin but safely in microdoses. Some of the mainstream brand names include Botox ®, Dysport ®, Azzalure ®, Xeomin ®, Vistabel ®, Bocouture ® and Neurobloc ®. At Clinica London, we generally use Dysport ® and Azzalure ® to treat periocular wrinkles, brow ptosis, blepharospasm, hemifacial spasm and facial palsy rehabilitation.
Botulinum toxin A is a very powerful toxin which when injected in minute amounts into a muscle, will cause a temporary paralysis of that muscle. It works on the motor end plates of skeletal muscle. It also has an action on sympathetic smooth muscle and glands such as sweat glands (used to stop underarm sweating).
