Orbital surgery is the surgical treatment of conditions affecting the orbital areas around the eyes. The bony orbits contain the eye and eye muscles, as well as some cushioning fat, blood vessels and nerves.
The orbits may be affected by trauma, tumour, thyroid eye disease and inflammation etc. This subspecialty of oculoplastics includes training in the management of orbital conditions, therefore oculoplastic surgeons have an indepth knowledge of the orbital anatomy and function, as well as the interpretation of the radiological tests often performed in the investigation of orbital conditions. Orbital surgery is performed by oculoplastic surgeons.
