Top Sun Safety Tips against Skin CancerProtect your skin with clothing and do not forget to wear a hat that protects your face, neck and ears, and a pair of UV protective sunglasses.  Spend time in the shade between 11 am and 3 pm when it is sunny.  Step out of the sun before your skin has a chance to redden or burn.  Keep your babies and young children out of direct sunlight.
When choosing a sunscreen, look for a high protection SPF (SPF 30 or more).  We recommend SPF 50 to protect against UVB and the UVA.  Apply plenty of sunscreen 15-30 minutes before going out in the sun. Reapply your sunscreen every two hours, and straightaway after swimming or towel drying. Towel drying removes the previously applied cream.  Do not use sunscreen as an alternative to clothing and shade. Sunscreen is only supplemental protection, as no sunscreen will provide 100% protection.
Take Vitamin D supplement tablets. They are available widely. Avoiding sunlight can reduce your Vitamin D levels and affect your bones.
If you have any areas of sun damage on your face, neck, or any other areas you should visit a dermatologist. These scaly sun damage areas can be actinic keratoses, Bowen’s disease, or other pre-cancerous lesions.  If you have these removed, that reduces your risk of getting a proper skin cancer.
