Clinica London sees international patients from all over the world for all ophthalmology and dermatology consultations, treatment, and surgery.

Many of our patients speak other languages than English and we encourage you to bring your Translator or an English-speaking family member to your consultation. Several of our Consultants speak other languages proficiently; French (Naomi Tan and Jane Olver), Greek (Michel Michaelides), Russian (Evgenia Anikina), Spanish (Jane Olver). In order to assist patients who are Arabic or Russian speaking, many pages of the Clinica London website have been translated into Arabic and Russian. Please note that our medical secretaries and reception staff are English speaking only.

Payment

All international patients are welcome at Clinica London. We accept both self-pay patients, those with international health insurance or if you are sponsored by your Government and Embassy. We provide the eye and skin care that you need whether you are living in the UK, staying here as a tourist, or visiting London to seek treatment from an Eye or Skin specialist.

What to Expect at Clinica London


When Clinica London communicates with international patients who may not speak English fluently, it’s important to ensure your experience at the clinic is as smooth and comfortable as possible.

Here’s a detailed outline of what your experience might entail, along with an expectation that you bring an interpreter if needed:

Appointment Scheduling: All Clinica London medical secretaries and reception staff are English speaking. Patients who schedule appointments either over the phone or online, are encouraged to mention your preferred language if it’s not English. For non-English speaking patients it may be easier for you to email your enquiry in your preferred language to the clinic. Clinica London personnel will use “Google Translate” to read then reply in English. Patients can use “Google Translate” to understand.If you are a non-English speaking patient, you are encouraged to use someone who is English speaking to organise the appointment and to bring an interpreter to the appointment.

VISAS
The administrative staff will advise you on VISAS if required, but the actual application must be made by you, the patient.

Confirmation of Booking and Reminder: Once your appointment is booked, you will receive your appointment confirmation and reminder messages in English via email, text, or phone call, which will include a note about the importance of language accessibility. The confirmation email has details about your appointment including a map showing where Clinica London is situated, what to bring with you, and contact number in case of emergency.

Patient confirmation of your appointment:

    • Self-pay: Once you have received your appointment you must confirm your planned consultation attendance and prepay if you are a self-paying patient.
    • Private Insurance: If insured with a private medical insurance company, to secure the appointment you must seek pre-authorisation from your insurer to attend, naming the clinic and consultant, and medical issue prior to your appointment.

Where we are: Clinica London is on the first mezzanine, first and second floors of 140 Harley Street, London W1G 7LB. We do not have an elevator (lift).

Welcoming Environment: The clinic’s reception area is designed to be welcoming and culturally sensitive. It is situated on the first mezzanine floor, up the flight of stairs you’ll see after entering the building.

Check-In Process: Reception staff will greet you warmly and confirm your appointment details together with your sponsoring body. If you do not speak English or have limited proficiency, you are encouraged to bring an interpreter with them. There will be a registration form to fill in, along with a form for medical details. You should bring along a list of all medications, eye drops, or skin creams to show the Consultant.

Interpreter Services: Clinica London do not provide you with an on-site interpreter for non-English-speaking patients. You are encouraged to organise and bring your own interpreter.

Local interpretation companies include Language Reach, www.languagereach.com and Translation Services 24 hours, www.translationservices24.com, to be organised independently by you, the patient.

Comfortable Seating: The waiting area on the second floor is spacious and with comfortable seating, situated adjacent to the Eye Diagnostic and Orthoptic Centre (Eye-DOC).

Privacy: Privacy and discretion is maintained during patient interactions, especially when discussing sensitive medical information.

Consulting Rooms: The consulting rooms, situated on the First Floor, are spacious and allow room for family members and interpreters to attend.

Treatment Surgery Room: Clinica London has a small treatment and Surgery room for treatments and procedures.

Treatments and Surgery: Often treatments or minor surgeries can be carried out on the same day under signed consent. Some surgeries are best planned and booked for a later date either at Clinica London or one of our affiliated hospitals where our Consultants have admissions.

Introductions: The Consultant introduces themselves and you will have the opportunity to explain the purpose of your visit. The consultant may ask you if you are comfortable communicating in English or if they would prefer to use an interpreter.

Interpreter Usage: If an interpreter is present, you must ensure that the interpreter is qualified and follows ethical standards regarding patient confidentiality. The interpreter is the responsibility of the patient.

Clear Communication: The Consultant will use clear and simple language, avoiding medical jargon, and will encourage you to ask questions.

Follow-Up Information: Patients are given clear instructions for follow-up care, medication, and any necessary appointments. Written materials, including prescriptions, are provided in English. A full report is prepared and emailed to you and your Embassy or sponsoring body, within a week of your consultation.

Scheduling Future Appointments: The clinic staff can help schedule follow-up appointments.

Expectation for International Patients: In appointment confirmations and reminders, it’s important to clearly communicate the expectation that if patients do not speak English fluently, they should bring an interpreter with them to the appointment. This expectation will be conveyed in a friendly and supportive manner, emphasising the importance of effective communication for your healthcare.
