Treat Your Glaucoma Or Cataracts

Ms Laura Crawley is a consultant ophthalmologist with an interest in glaucoma and cataracts. She trained at Moorfields and the Western Eye Hospitals in central London. Laura did her specialist fellowship with Professor Philip Bloom and then took a locum consultant’s post at the Western Eye Hospital before becoming a full-time NHS consultant. She runs glaucoma clinics and performs cataract and glaucoma surgery at the Western Eye Hospital as part of her NHS work.

Her private practice is run here at Clinica London, where she is available on Mondays, Wednesdays and some Fridays. She can also see patients at relatively short notice at other times by special arrangement. Laura’s expertise in cataract and glaucoma surgery means that she sees many patients who are suffering from open-angle or narrow-angle glaucoma.

These patients will most likely be in the 40-plus age group and may be developing an enlarged lens from an early cataract. It is often advisable for her to operate on the cataract as well as glaucoma. This process will help to open up the angle where there is a risk of narrow-angle or angle-closure glaucoma or actual glaucoma.

Galucoma Surgery

For the 60-plus age group, Laura mainly does cataract surgery, but she takes great care of the front of the eye where the aqueous drainage takes place to ensure that it remains unimpeded. Laura also does minimally invasive glaucoma surgery, also known as MIGS, in which the patient receives microscopic glaucoma drainage implants. MIGS is a commonly used abbreviation in the treatment of glaucoma, and patients are gradually learning about the technique as it becomes more mainstream. MIGS is a miniaturised version of trabeculectomy, in which the surgeon places a tiny bypass shunt in the angle of the eye, either into the Schlemm’s canal or more often nowadays into the suprachoroidal space.

Although Laura usually performs MIGS at the same time as cataract surgery, the procedure is more likely to take place separately for patients with moderately severe glaucoma. MIGS requires a highly skilled specialist such as Laura Crawley, who is very experienced in microscopic glaucoma surgery. She will advise on whether you are suitable for MIGS to reduce eye pressure and thus prevent or reduce damage to your optic nerve.
