Private Cataract Surgery

Private cataract surgery offers several benefits and advantages over traditional NHS treatment. With private cataract surgery, patients receive tailored care. At Clinica London, our consultants work with each patient to develop a personalised treatment plan. Clinica London has five experienced cataract surgeons.

In addition to personalised care, private cataract surgery offers flexibility in terms of when, where, and how you receive treatment. Post-surgery monitoring is also more rigorous than with NHS treatment, which helps detect any issues early and address them before they become serious.

One of the most significant benefits of private cataract surgery is that there is little or no waiting time. At Clinica London, our consultant ophthalmologists regularly perform cataract surgeries with high success rates. Our fully qualified doctors assess each patient’s situation and discuss the details of the cataract surgery risks, to determine whether it is suitable.

What is a Cataract?

A cataract is a dense, cloudy region developing within the eye lens. Cataracts develop slowly and may not initially cause any symptoms.

As they grow, cataracts cause vision to become blurry, dimmed, distorted, or experience troublesome glare, making it difficult to perform daily activities such as reading or driving.

While cataracts are most commonly associated with ageing, anyone can develop this condition.

Some risk factors for cataracts include:

  • smoking
  • heavy alcohol consumption
  • obesity
  • high blood pressure
  • diabetes
  • exposure to too much sunlight
  • eye trauma
  • eye inflammation

Cataracts can also be hereditary, so people with a family history of cataracts may be more likely to develop them.

Cataracts come in different types, classified by their location within the lens.

What is Cataract surgery?

Cataract surgery is the only way to treat a cataract. It involves replacing the cloudy lens of the eye with an artificial intraocular lens. The new lens allows you to see more light and have clear vision again.

The procedure is highly specialised and accurate and requires an ophthalmic surgeon with specific intro-ocular microsurgical skills. The surgery is done as a same-day case, and you do not have to stay in the hospital overnight.

Do You Need Cataract Surgery?

Cataracts progress over time, leading to increasingly impaired eyesight. Medications have no impact on improving or slowing the development and effects of cataracts. Depending on the stage of your cataract, surgery might be avoidable.

If your cataract is minor, you may be able to postpone the surgery and instead monitor it with regular checkups. However, if the cataract has progressed to the point where it interferes with your everyday activities or lifestyle, surgery may be necessary.

Keep the following questions in mind when considering whether you should undergo the surgery:

  • Can you see well enough to perform your job safely?
  • Do you experience difficulty reading?
  • Are you finding it difficult to drive at night or in poor light?
  • Is it hard to do basic daily tasks because of your cataract?
  • Do vision problems affect your level of independence?

Why You Should Have Cataract Surgery

Cataract surgery is a life-changing procedure that can significantly improve your vision and quality of life. Here are some of the key benefits of the surgery:

Regain Your Clear Vision

After cataract surgery, you can see more light and have clear vision again. The two eyes will work better together again and the overall quality of vision is improved. Removing the cataract allows you to focus and enjoy your life to the fullest. The results of the cataract surgery are noticeable right after the procedure.

Quick Recovery

Cataract surgery is a day-case procedure, which means you do not have to stay in the hospital overnight. Recovery time is minimal, and most patients notice a significant improvement within a few days.

Very Low Risks

Cataract surgery is a safe and low-risk procedure, and complications are rare. You will notice the instantaneous effect of cataract surgery within a few days.

If you are experiencing glare and blurred vision that is affecting your daily life and eye health, consider booking a consultation with one of the Clinica London cataract surgeons for a cataract check.

Treatment Options

When undergoing cataract surgery, there are different types of intraocular lenses (IOLs) used to replace the natural lens of the eye and improve vision. These include:

  • Monofocal lenses: The most common type of IOL, monofocal lenses provide clear vision at one distance. Patients who choose monofocal lenses will need to wear glasses or contact lenses to see clearly at other distances.
  • Multifocal lenses: These lenses allow for clear vision at multiple distances, reducing or eliminating the need for glasses or contact lenses after surgery.
  • Toric lenses: For patients with astigmatism, toric lenses can correct this condition and improve vision.
  • Accommodating lenses: These lenses move with the eye’s natural muscles, allowing for clear vision at multiple distances.

At Clinica London, we will assess your situation and help you choose the best type of IOL for your needs and lifestyle. You will have a biometry scan to measure your eye for the intra-ocular lens at your assessment consultation, and discuss your post surgery eye preferences directly with your ophthalmic surgeon.

Before the procedure

Before scheduling cataract removal surgery at Clinica London, you will need to come in for an initial consultation with your cataract surgeon to go over your medical history and understand the process of the surgery.

During the consultation, you will have the opportunity to discuss with our ophthalmic specialist the details of the surgery and your preferences for the type of lens implant (near-sighted or far-sighted), as well as any additional questions or concerns you may have.

We will also assess your eye prescription and your medical history. You will also be informed of any potential complications from cataract surgery and agree on a personalised care plan.

During the procedure

Our consultant ophthalmic surgeons perform cataract surgery using local anaesthesia, which can be administered through infiltrated injections or topical eye drops. In special cases, you can ask to receive sedation local anaesthetic or a general anaesthetic. The eye pupil is dilated to show the lens better.

During the procedure, your eye surgeon makes a tiny incision in the front of your eye (cornea) and inserts a needle-thin probe into the lens substance where the cataract has formed. Your surgeon then uses the probe, which transmits ultrasound waves, to break up the cataract and suction out the fragments.

The very back of your lens (the posterior lens capsule) is left intact to serve as a place for the artificial lens to rest. The surgeon replaces the cataract with an artificial intraocular lens, which can be chosen based on your personal preferences. At the end of the procedure an eye dressing is placed over the operated eye for 12 to 24 hours.

After the Procedure

After the procedure, our surgeon will provide you with instructions for post-operative care, including eye drops or medications.  Recovery time is minimal, and most patients with eye surgery notice a significant improvement in their vision within a few days.

What do patients experience after cataract surgery?

You will need to wear an eye shield at night to protect your eye from rubbing or bumping against anything while sleeping. You will find wearing dark glasses outside for the first few days makes the operated eye feel more comfortable. Avoid heavy lifting, bending over, or any strenuous activity for a few weeks after the surgery to allow your eye to fully heal. You should also avoid swimming or any activities that may expose your eyes to water or irritants.

If you experience any unusual symptoms after cataract surgery, such as severe pain, severe light sensitivity, redness, or vision loss, contact us immediately.

Some of the potential complications of cataract surgery include:

  • Posterior capsule opacity (PCO)

  • Eye inflammation
  • Intra-ocular eye infection
  • Light sensitivity
  • Photopsia (perceived flashes of light)

CATARACT FAQS

Cataract surgery is generally considered a safe and low-risk procedure, with the majority of patients experiencing excellent results. The overall complication rate for cataract surgery is less than 0.1%.

Complications from cataract surgery are rare; most of them are minor and can be successfully treated medically or with additional surgery.

As cataract surgery is usually only conducted on one eye at a time, your sight will not be completely impaired. This means that even a day after surgery, you can return to work (depending on the nature of your job). Taking 48 hours off work is perfectly acceptable whilst you are accustomed to your new vision and instilling post-operative eye drops.

Physically demanding work, such as bending with the head below the waist, straining, and lifting heavy objects can create pressure in the eye area, and can cause the incision to open, so these activities should be avoided until your eye is completely healed. You are advised not to fly for the first 7 to 10 days.

The main advantage of private healthcare is having the flexibility to choose when, where, with whom, and how you receive your treatment treatment.

At Clinica London you have access to the best, most experienced cataract consultants to perform your operation. Your care will be tailored to your specific needs, with much stricter monitoring post-surgery.

Customised vision-correcting IOLs are not available through the NHS and only available privately. Currently, patients must wait until their vision is very poor (6/12 or 20/40) before qualifying for cataract surgery through the NHS. With private cataract surgery at Clinica London, you will not have to wait if your cataract needs cataract surgery.
