Eczema Signs, Symptoms, & Causes

At Clinica London, our approach to eczema treatment is guided by our deep understanding of the condition’s signs, symptoms, and causes. While we recognise that there is no one-size-fits-all cure for eczema, our dedicated team of specialists, including one of the most renowned eczema medical dermatologists in London, are committed to providing tailored treatments that effectively manage and control symptoms, helping improve our patient’s quality of life.

Understanding Eczema

Eczema, particularly atopic eczema starting in childhood, is a chronic skin condition characterised by dry, itchy skin that can lead to redness, swelling, and sometimes infection. It’s one of the most common eczemas we see in children and adults and treat here at Clinica London. The term ‘eczema’ often encompasses a range of skin conditions, including contact dermatitis, dyshidrotic eczema, and more, each with its unique triggers and symptoms.

Signs & Symptoms

Eczema’s common sign is an intense itch and soreness that can lead to scratching, further aggravating the skin. The skin is no longer “waterproof” and becomes swollen and prone to infection. Symptoms can vary from mild to severe and often include:

  • Dry, sensitive skin
  • Red, inflamed areas
  • Dark-coloured patches of skin
  • Rough, scaly, or leathery patches
  • Oozing or crusting
  • Areas of swelling

Understanding what eczema looks like can be the first step toward effective treatment. It can appear differently on various skin colours, making diagnosis and treatment highly personalised.

Causes

The exact cause of eczema remains unknown, but it’s believed to be driven by genetic and environmental factors. The immune system’s overactive response to an irritant or allergen is thought to play a key role. Factors that can worsen eczema include:

  • Dry skin
  • Environmental irritants (like harsh soaps and detergents)
  • Allergens (such as pet dander, pollen, and dust mites)
  • Stress
  • Hormonal changes

At Clinica London, we understand that managing eczema goes beyond treating the skin. Although there is no cure for eczema, we aim to control your symptoms, reduce inflammation, and improve your skin’s health and appearance.

Our eczema specialist at Clinica London offer a comprehensive approach that includes identifying and avoiding triggers, using prescription medications to control symptoms and inflammation, and employing therapies such as topical treatments and light therapy as part of a personalised treatment plan.

Eczema in Children

At Clinica London, we understand that seeing your child struggle with eczema can be heart-wrenching. Children’s skin is delicate and sensitive, making them more susceptible to this condition.

Eczema affects children’s skin and can impact their sleep, comfort, and overall quality of life. Dr Jennifer Crawley, our esteemed eczema specialist, has extensive experience treating paediatric eczema and offers insight into managing this condition effectively.

Eczema often starts in childhood, presenting as dry, itchy patches that can become red and inflamed due to scratching. It’s not just the physical symptoms that are a concern; the constant itchiness can lead to sleep disturbances and irritability and affect a child’s mood and self-esteem. Dr. Crawley emphasises the importance of a comprehensive approach to treating eczema in children. This involves identifying and avoiding triggers, such as certain fabrics or food allergies, and using emollients to moisturise the skin. Steroid creams and ointments of different strengths and topical antibiotics creams and ointments are often prescribed.

In some cases, stronger prescription medications may be necessary to control inflammation and manage symptoms effectively. Exciting newer drugs such as topical calcineurin inhibitors have made an enormous difference to eczema treatment, reducing the use of steroid ointments and creams and their associated potential side-effects.

At Clinica London, our goal is to make your child as comfortable as possible, using treatments that are both gentle and effective.

Don’t let eczema control your child’s life. Schedule a consultation with our paediatric eczema specialists today. Together, we can create a treatment plan that soothes your child’s skin, improves their comfort, and lets them enjoy being a child again.

Different Types of Eczema

While our primary focus at Clinica London is providing bespoke eczema treatment plans, tailored to each individual’s needs, it’s beneficial to acknowledge the variety of eczema types that exist. Understanding the different forms of eczema can help in recognising symptoms and seeking appropriate treatment. Though atopic dermatitis is the most common form we treat, several other types of eczema can affect individuals, each with its own triggers and symptoms.

Atopic Dermatitis

Atopic dermatitis is the most frequently encountered type of eczema, often beginning in childhood. Characterised by dry, itchy skin that can become inflamed and infected, it’s a condition that requires a careful, managed approach to treatment. At Clinica London, our eczema specialists have extensive experience in treating atopic dermatitis, offering relief and management strategies to those affected.

Other Types of Eczema

While atopic dermatitis may be the most common, several other eczema types can impact individuals, including:

  • Contact Dermatitis: This occurs when the skin comes into contact with an irritant or allergen, leading to a localised rash.
  • Dyshidrotic Eczema: Characterised by small blisters on the hands and feet, this type of eczema can be particularly uncomfortable.
  • Seborrheic Dermatitis: Commonly affecting the scalp and face, this type results in scaly patches, red skin, and stubborn dandruff.
  • Nummular Eczema: This form is marked by circular spots on the skin that can be itchy and scaly.
  • Stasis Dermatitis: Often occurring in the legs due to poor blood flow, this type can lead to swelling, itching, and pain.

Recognising the type of eczema you or your loved one is facing is the first step towards seeking effective treatment. Understanding the type of eczema you’re dealing with is crucial in finding the most effective treatment. Contact us today to learn more about how we can tailor a treatment plan specifically for you, aiming to improve your skin health and quality of life.

Specific Treatment

At Clinica London, our approach to eczema treatment is personalised, considering the unique needs and conditions of each patient, whether they are children or adults. Our treatment procedures are meticulously designed to manage symptoms effectively and improve skin health over the long term.

Eczema can affect various parts of the body, including the face, hands, feet, inside the elbows, and behind the knees. Treatment areas are identified based on where eczema flare-ups are most severe and how the condition impacts the patient’s daily life.

The treatment procedure begins with a detailed consultation to understand the patient’s medical history, the severity of their condition, and any previous treatments. From there, our eczema specialists tailor a treatment plan that may include a combination of emollients, topical treatments, and, if necessary, oral medication.

As a starting point for their treatment, we recommend that every patient takes on a detailed skincare regime. Emollients play a crucial role in this initial phase, providing moisture to the skin and forming a protective barrier to prevent dryness and irritation.

How Many Sessions Are Needed?

The number of sessions or duration of treatment varies depending on the individual’s condition, the type of eczema, and how they respond to the initial treatments. Some patients may see improvements within a few weeks, while others may require ongoing management to control their eczema effectively.

Treatments

Emollients

Emollients are fundamental in the treatment of eczema. They help to moisturise the skin, reduce itching and flaking, and form a protective layer to guard against environmental irritants. Regular use of emollients is recommended for all eczema patients as part of their daily skincare routine.

Topical Eczema Treatment

Topical treatments, including steroids and calcineurin inhibitors, are often prescribed to reduce inflammation and ease symptoms. Topical steroids are used for short-term flare-ups, while topical calcineurin inhibitors may be recommended for longer-term use in sensitive areas where steroid use is limited.

Oral Medication

For more severe cases of eczema or when topical treatments are not sufficient, oral medications may be necessary. Oral immunosuppressants can help to control the immune system’s response, reducing inflammation and the severity of eczema symptoms.

Phototherapy

Phototherapy, or light therapy, is another treatment option for managing eczema, particularly for cases that are moderate to severe or do not respond well to conventional treatments. This method involves exposing the skin to controlled amounts of natural sunlight or artificial ultraviolet light under the guidance of a specialist. Phototherapy helps to reduce itchiness, inflammation, and the frequency of eczema flare-ups, providing a safe and effective alternative for those who require more than topical treatments and emollients.

Eczema treatment at Clinica London is comprehensive, focusing on alleviating symptoms and improving the overall quality of life for our patients. Our specialist is committed to providing personalised care, from the initial consultation to the treatment plan and follow-up. If you’re struggling with eczema, reach out to us. Eczema Self-Care

Managing eczema effectively often requires a combination of professional medical treatments and diligent self-care practices. At Clinica London, we understand the importance of empowering our patients with knowledge and tools for self-care to complement the treatments our eczema specialists provide. Dr Jennifer Crawley, our esteemed dermatologist, offers valuable advice for coping with atopic dermatitis, emphasising the role of self-care in managing this condition.

Tips for Eczema Self-Care

  • Moisturise Regularly: Keeping your skin moisturised is crucial in managing eczema. Use emollients and moisturisers daily to prevent dryness and relieve itchiness. Apply within minutes after bathing to lock in moisture.
  • Gentle Skincare Products: Opt for gentle, fragrance-free soaps and skincare products to avoid irritating sensitive skin. Harsh chemicals and fragrances can trigger eczema flare-ups.
  • Avoid Triggers: Identify and avoid known triggers that can worsen your eczema. This may include certain fabrics, detergents, soaps, and allergens like dust mites and pet dander.
  • Wear Comfortable Clothing: Choose soft, breathable fabrics like cotton to minimise skin irritation. Avoid wearing tight-fitting or rough-textured clothing.
  • Manage Stress: Stress can exacerbate eczema symptoms. Incorporate stress-reduction techniques such as yoga, meditation, or deep breathing exercises into your daily routine.
  • Keep Nails Short: Short nails reduce the risk of breaking the skin when scratching. Consider wearing gloves at night to prevent scratching in your sleep.
  • Use Anti-itch Creams: Over-the-counter anti-itch creams can provide temporary relief from itching. For more severe cases, consult your doctor for a prescription-strength option.
  • Stay Cool: Overheating can trigger eczema flare-ups. Keep your living environment cool and avoid sudden temperature changes.

While not a standard part of self-care for eczema, anaesthetics or numbing creams may be used in specific situations, such as before medical procedures that might cause discomfort on sensitive eczema-affected skin, however, for routine eczema management, focusing on the above self-care tips is more relevant and beneficial.

Recovery & Aftercare

Managing eczema is a journey, with recovery and remission as crucial goals. At Clinica London, we emphasise the importance of a comprehensive aftercare plan to support your path to recovery. Understanding that eczema can be a long-term condition requiring ongoing management; we’re dedicated to providing you with the tools and knowledge for effective self-care and symptom management.

Recovery from an eczema flare-up involves more than just skin healing. It encompasses regaining comfort, preventing further flare-ups, and maintaining the skin’s health over time.

Our team focuses on treatments that offer relief from symptoms and strategies to strengthen the skin’s barrier function, reducing the likelihood of future episodes. A personalised aftercare plan is essential for the long-term management of eczema.

This may include:

  • Continued use of emollients to keep the skin moisturised.
  • Routine follow-up appointments to monitor your condition and adjust treatments as needed.
  • Education on trigger avoidance will help you identify and steer clear of factors that exacerbate your symptoms.
  • Stress management techniques, recognising the role of stress in eczema flare-ups.
  • Dietary advice if food allergies or sensitivities are identified as triggers.

Achieving remission—where symptoms are minimal to non-existent—is crucial for many with eczema. It’s important to note that the road to remission can vary significantly among individuals. Some may find specific treatments highly effective, while others may require a combination of therapies over time. Regular consultations with our specialists ensure your treatment aligns with your evolving needs.

Risk & Side Effects

In managing eczema, being aware of potential risks and side effects associated with various treatments is crucial. While commonly prescribed and effective for many, topical medications can lead to skin irritation and burning sensations. Having an open dialogue with your healthcare provider about these treatments is vital, and can allow you to ensure your treatment plan is tailored to your specific needs and health profile while minimising any adverse effects. Understanding these potential risks helps you make informed decisions about your eczema management plan.
